In a tragic event on March 12, 2024, Tiffany K. Mawhorter, a 42-year-old Caucasian woman, was killed in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Her life was cut short by a perforating gunshot wound to the neck, and her death has been officially ruled a homicide.
The incident unfolded at an apartment complex on East Nelson Avenue, where Mawhorter was one of three victims in a brutal triple homicide. The other women killed were 52-year-old Africa A. Woods-McGill and 48-year-old Venus M. Hart.
The women were discovered in two separate apartments within the complex.
The suspect in the killings was identified as 43-year-old Edward J. Brooks. After the shootings, Brooks was confronted by North Las Vegas police officers in the courtyard of the apartment complex. Armed with a handgun, he advanced toward the officers and ignored their commands to drop his weapon. Two officers then fired at Brooks, fatally wounding him.
Investigators believe Brooks was the sole person responsible for the deaths of Mawhorter, Woods-McGill, and Hart. A dog was also found killed at the scene. Authorities stated that there did not appear to be a domestic relationship between Brooks and any of the victims. A motive for the violent rampage has not been released. It was later revealed that Brooks had a lengthy criminal history that included charges of robbery, murder, and rape. Due to his death at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the triple homicide.
