On the evening of October 11, 2024, in a quiet Henderson, Nevada neighborhood, the life of 20-year-old Evan Scoggins was tragically cut short in an act of violence that also claimed the life of his mother. Evan, a White male, and his mother, 44-year-old Anastasiya Groschen, were fatally shot inside their home on Black Rock Hills Drive. The sole suspect in the double homicide is Evan's stepfather and Anastasiya's husband, 41-year-old Karl Groschen.
The events of that Friday evening
unfolded with a chilling 911 call from Karl Groschen himself, telling the dispatcher, "You need to come here now; there's a huge crime scene." When Henderson police officers arrived, they were met by Groschen, who was holding prescription bottles and a drink. He reportedly told the officers, "You have to take me; I thought they were trying to kill me." A subsequent investigation, however, found no evidence to support his claim that he was in danger.
Inside the home, police discovered a grim scene. Anastasiya's body was found in the garage, behind the driver's seat of a Toyota Prius. Evan's body was located in the laundry room. Both victims had suffered approximately five gunshot wounds each. A neighbor later recounted to police hearing loud noises around 5:30 p.m. and witnessing Groschen push his stepson out of the garage while yelling, "Go to your car, get out of here." Shortly after, the neighbor heard gunshots and screams. It is believed that Evan ran back inside the house in an attempt to protect his mother.
Karl Groschen was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with two counts of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon and one count of child abuse, neglect, or endangerment with the use of a deadly weapon, as his and Anastasiya's young child was present during the incident. He is being held without bail at the Henderson Detention Center. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Groschen had recently lost his job and had been prescribed medication for anxiety and depression. A Clark County grand jury indicted him on all charges. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Groschen was found competent to stand trial. Prosecutors have stated their intention to seek the death penalty. Evan Scoggins was remembered as a vibrant young man with a passion for hiking, filmmaking, and art. At the time of his death, he was studying computer animation.
