In the late summer of 2018, the life of Qaid Muhammad, a 29-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On September 12, 2018, his body was discovered on a street in Henderson, Nevada. The former bantamweight prospect, who had once been an alternate for the 2008 U.S. Olympic boxing team, had moved to the Las Vegas area from New Jersey with aspirations of reviving his professional boxing career.
He had been training at Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s gym in preparation for a comeback fight that was anticipated to take place later that year.
The circumstances surrounding Muhammad's death were violent. An investigation revealed that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities reported that after being shot, his body was pushed out of a black SUV and left in the desert-like landscape of Henderson. The discovery of his remains prompted a homicide investigation by the Henderson Police Department, bringing a somber end to the boxer's dreams of returning to the ring.
In the wake of the investigation, an arrest was made in connection with the murder. A 38-year-old man named Ryan Small, who was reportedly an acquaintance of Muhammad, was taken into custody. Small was subsequently charged with murder with a deadly weapon. According to Muhammad's father, his son was on his way to the Mayweather boxing gym when he got into the vehicle from which his body was later discarded.
