On January 26, 2024, the life of 42-year-old Shannon Patricia Trejo was tragically cut short in a violent home invasion in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. In a harrowing event that also claimed the lives of her husband, Mario Alberto Trejo Estrada, 39, and her son, Jorge Alexander Reyes-Jungwirth, 20, Shannon was fatally shot inside her family's residence on the 200 block of 94th Avenue Northwest.
Two of Shannon and Mario's young children, ages two and four, were present in the home at the time of the killings but were physically unharmed.
The incident unfolded around 12:24 p.m. when dispatchers received a 911 call with sounds of a disturbance in the background. Responding officers discovered a grim scene, with Shannon, Mario, and Jorge all deceased from gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly pointed to a targeted attack, with suspects allegedly posing as UPS delivery drivers to gain entry to the home. Surveillance footage from both inside and outside the residence captured three individuals arriving in a vehicle, with two wearing uniforms resembling those of UPS workers.
Authorities have since arrested and charged three men in connection with the triple homicide. Alonzo Pierre Mingo, 37, of Fridley, was apprehended on the same day as the murders and was later found guilty of multiple counts of first-degree murder. Two brothers from Minneapolis, Omari Shumpert, 19, and Demetrius Shumpert, 31, were also charged with second-degree murder, with charges later elevated to first-degree murder.
Court documents and surveillance footage revealed that the assailants held Shannon and her family at gunpoint while demanding money. The criminal complaint details a horrific sequence of events where Omari Shumpert allegedly shot one of the male victims after he fought back. Following this, Mingo is said to have fatally shot Shannon in a bedroom, a traumatic event witnessed by her young children. Mingo then proceeded to shoot the second male victim. The investigation into the motive has uncovered a possible connection to drug trafficking, as court documents indicate that Mario Trejo was under investigation for the sale of illegal narcotics. Evidence suggested that the couple had been sending large sums of money to Mexico.
