On the afternoon of August 19, 2024, a life was tragically cut short in Minneapolis amidst a scene of chaos. JaBraun Garron Hole, a 33-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally wounded following a large altercation that erupted at a homeless encampment. The dispute, which began shortly after 5 p.m. in the 3300 block of South 3rd Avenue, escalated and spilled out onto the street.
During the melee, Hole was shot once in the torso.
Emergency responders arrived to find him on the sidewalk and quickly transported him to Hennepin County Medical Center. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries that same day. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound and classified it as a homicide. In the immediate aftermath, Minneapolis police cleared the encampment, which had been a source of safety concerns for local residents.
The investigation into the shooting led to an arrest on September 13, 2024. Authorities charged 37-year-old Ahmed Ali Abdi with second-degree intentional murder and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with Hole's death. According to the criminal complaint, surveillance footage from the scene was instrumental in identifying Abdi. The video reportedly showed a group of men, including Abdi, in an altercation with Hole. At one point, Abdi is seen raising his arm toward Hole, who then appears to be shot and is seen holding his side as he runs.
In the wake of his death, family and friends remembered JaBraun Garron Hole as a compassionate man dedicated to helping others. A fundraising effort was initiated to assist his family with funeral expenses, highlighting his regular efforts to provide food, water, and other necessities to those in need, often at his own expense.
