A dispute that began on Interstate 35E on the evening of November 4, 2024, escalated into a fatal road rage incident that claimed the life of 26-year-old Tajai Evans of St. Paul, Minnesota. Evans was a passenger in a Toyota Corolla when the driver had an encounter with another motorist. The conflict, which reportedly involved the other driver "brake checking" their vehicle, continued off the highway.
The driver of the other vehicle, a Hyundai, followed the Corolla.
At one point, after the Corolla had pulled into a strip mall parking lot, the Hyundai driver allegedly threw something at the car. Later, the driver of the Corolla pulled up next to the parked Hyundai. Evans then exited the Corolla and began punching the other driver through his open window.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 25-year-old Ian Loi Bursey of Minneapolis, then shot Evans. After being shot, Evans got back into the Corolla and the driver sped off, attempting to get to a hospital, but crashed at the intersection of 12th and Cedar Streets. Police who responded to the crash scene found Evans inside the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bursey himself called 911 to report that he had been assaulted and had shot his attacker. When police arrived at his location on the 500 block of Front Street, they found him with a bloody nose. Bursey claimed he "panicked" during the assault and shot Evans. He stated he was not trying to kill him but was concerned that Evans might have a weapon. The driver of the Corolla said Evans was unarmed and that the shooting happened very quickly after the first punch was thrown. Police arrested Bursey, and he has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
