Michael Gray, a 33-year-old resident of Saint Paul, MN, was fatally shot on May 4, 2019, outside Johnny Baby's bar located at University Avenue and Chatsworth Street. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when police responded to reports of a shooting in the bar's parking lot. Upon arrival, officers found Gray facedown with gunshot wounds to his arm and head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators discovered four bullet casings nearby, indicating they were fired from the same gun.
Through witness statements and surveillance footage, it was revealed that Gray was attempting to get into the back of a white Kia sedan parked in the lot before one of the occupants leaned out and shot him. The vehicle was traced back to its owner, who had lent it to a man referred to as 'TC' for brake repairs. TC, found with the Kia days later, claimed he was at the bar that night but had loaned the car to someone else. Inside the Kia, investigators found a matchbook, fingerprints, and a cigarette butt, which were sent for forensic analysis.
Nearly four years after the incident, Devante Lattrele Jennings, 28, was charged with second-degree intentional murder and second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony in connection with Gray's death. Jennings, already in prison for possession of a firearm by an ineligible person, was identified through fingerprints found in the Kia and surveillance footage from the bar. During an interview at Moose Lake prison, Jennings did not deny being the person captured in the surveillance photos.
Another individual, Wayne Brown, who was also linked to the case, was murdered near St. Paul Saloon on September 28, 2019, by Gray's friends. However, no charges have been filed in connection with Brown's killing. The investigation into Michael Gray's death continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
