In the cold of a late December evening in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a simple act of intervention turned tragically fatal for a 44-year-old Black/African American man named Kenneth L. Davis Jr. The night of December 27, 2021, unfolded with an ordinary scene at Big Discount Liquors on Rice Street, where Davis was a familiar and protective presence to the staff. It was just before 10 p.m. when he noticed another man attempting to conceal a bottle of vodka.
