In the cold of a late December evening in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a simple act of intervention turned tragically fatal for a 44-year-old Black/African American man named Kenneth L. Davis Jr. The night of December 27, 2021, unfolded with an ordinary scene at Big Discount Liquors on Rice Street, where Davis was a familiar and protective presence to the staff. It was just before 10 p.m.
when he noticed another man attempting to conceal a bottle of vodka.
Davis decided to step in, confronting 49-year-old Trinis Derrell Edwards over the theft. The initial dispute, sparked by a $12 bottle of vodka, quickly escalated. Davis, who was licensed to carry a firearm, reportedly showed his weapon in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and encourage Edwards to leave the store. However, the confrontation spilled out of the liquor store and into the harsh reality of the parking lot. A physical struggle ensued between the two men.
In the ensuing chaos, Davis's handgun fell to the ground. Edwards managed to grab the weapon before Davis could retrieve it. He then fired the gun, striking Davis twice in the chest. The man who had sought to protect a local business was now gravely wounded. Emergency services were called, and Davis was rushed to Regions Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of the following morning.
The investigation that followed moved swiftly, aided by surveillance footage that captured the entire incident. The video evidence was crucial in identifying Trinis Derrell Edwards as the shooter. Law enforcement tracked him to a Motel 6 in Saint Paul where he was staying with his girlfriend. After a tense situation where Edwards barricaded himself in the bathroom, he eventually surrendered to the authorities. His girlfriend later confirmed his identity to investigators. Edwards was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He claimed that the shooting was an act of self-defense. In a turn of events, a jury would later acquit Edwards of the charges in May of 2022.
