On January 21, 2023, 30-year-old Joseph Austin "Joe" Smith of Wichita, Kansas, died in a tragic hunting accident near Geuda Springs. While seated in the front passenger seat of a pickup truck, a dog stepped on a rifle in the back seat, causing it to discharge and fatally wound Smith. Emergency responders arrived promptly and administered CPR, but Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
