In the early morning hours of Friday, October 16, 2020, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet in Independence, Kansas, leading to a tragic discovery. A Black / African American man named Tyler Cook, age 27, was found deceased inside a vehicle that had crashed into an apartment building. He was not alone. Alongside him, another man, 24-year-old Rodricus Dawson, had also lost his life, and a 27-year-old woman was discovered with injuries from the attack.
The investigation into the
double homicide quickly involved both the Independence Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The incident, which began with a 911 call from a citizen reporting gunshots, drew significant law enforcement resources to uncover the circumstances of the violent encounter. The injured woman was transported to a hospital for treatment and was expected to survive her injuries. The community was left seeking answers as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the deaths of the two young men.
Within a few days, a break in the case came with the arrest of a suspect. On Sunday, October 18, investigators served an arrest warrant to 18-year-old James T. S. Gofourth of Independence. Gofourth was already incarcerated at the Labette County Jail on unrelated charges, including aggravated robbery and drug possession, when he was formally accused in connection with the fatal shootings.
The warrant charged Gofourth with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Tyler Cook and Rodricus Dawson. Additionally, he faced one count of attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the female victim in the vehicle. The investigation continued after the arrest, with authorities appealing to the public for any further information that could shed light on the tragic events of that Friday morning.
