In the early evening of July 6, 2025, the life of 32-year-old Kelly Black, a White male, was cut short in Wichita, Kansas. Officers responded to a shooting just before 6 p.m. in the 7000 block of E. Lincoln, where they discovered Black on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the days following the shooting, police identified the victim as Kelly Black and began a
homicide investigation. Initially, no suspects were in custody, and the police appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Black's family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil a week after his death at the location where he was shot, remembering him as a sweet and smart individual. His sister shared that he had an associate's degree in auto mechanics and, although he was homeless by choice, he was on the verge of moving into his own apartment.
The investigation led to a breakthrough with the identification of a suspect. On July 15, 2025, 31-year-old Andrew R. Presley was arrested in connection with Black's murder. The arrest was made by the Hutchinson Police Department after a brief standoff. Presley, a parolee with a history of convictions for aggravated robbery and aggravated battery, was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon.
