In the early hours of June 3, 2023, the life of 20-year-old Cameron Renner, a White male from Lawrence, Kansas, was tragically cut short. Just after 1 a.m., residents in the vicinity of 24th Street and Cedarwood Avenue were startled by the sound of gunshots, prompting several calls to the police. As officers were responding to the scene, a car was seen speeding into the emergency department entrance of a local hospital.
Inside the vehicle was Cameron Renner, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel pulled him from the back seat, but he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. The three other men who were in the car with Renner claimed not to know his identity, which initially complicated the investigation. However, with the public's assistance, police were able to identify him within a few days.
Renner, who was born on December 17, 2002, in Topeka, had been raised in Rossville and Topeka and was a 2021 graduate of Shawnee Heights High School. He had been working as a roofer in the construction industry at the time of his death. His family and friends remembered him as an outgoing and fun-loving individual who could light up any room and was always making people laugh.
The investigation into Cameron Renner's death continued for several months. Through the use of forensic evidence, investigators were able to link 23-year-old Maliqe Crenshaw of Lawrence to the shooting, leading to his arrest in November 2023. Crenshaw was initially charged with second-degree murder. The prosecution alleged that Crenshaw had acted "unintentionally, but recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life".
Details that emerged during the legal proceedings painted a picture of a confrontation that escalated with deadly consequences. According to a defense motion, Renner and his friends had allegedly threatened Crenshaw and his friends during a video call shortly before the shooting, at one point displaying a firearm. It was further alleged that Renner and his companions, wearing masks, arrived at the apartment where Crenshaw lived and threw an explosive device onto the balcony. Crenshaw, who was walking with friends toward his apartment at that moment, claimed that in fear for his life, he drew his pistol and fired three shots in the direction of the masked individuals. Following the shooting, one of Crenshaw's friends discovered Renner collapsed in the grass. In July 2024, Maliqe Crenshaw pleaded no contest to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Expressing deep remorse for his actions, Crenshaw was later sentenced to 31 months in prison.
