In the summer of 2023, the life of a young mother was tragically cut short in Wellington, Kansas. Sydney Edgington, a 25-year-old Caucasian woman, died on July 3, 2023, following a domestic dispute with her husband. The incident unfolded in their home at 1316 North A Street, where an argument escalated to a fatal conclusion.
On that Monday afternoon, Wellington police officers responded to a shooting report at the residence around 1:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, they found Sydney with a single gunshot wound to her upper chest. She was transported in critical condition to Wesley Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Her husband, Michael Eugene Edgington, then 24 years old, was identified as the shooter and was taken into custody.
The argument reportedly began over a trivial matter, with Michael claiming Sydney became angry with him for not taking out the trash. He alleged that she was experiencing manic episodes after a recent change in her medication. According to Michael's account to the police, the confrontation escalated, and Sydney threw a small concrete figurine at him, striking him in the head. In response, he shot her with a 9mm pistol.
Michael Edgington was initially charged with second-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement. In January 2025, a judge sentenced him to 61 months in prison, which is just over five years. During the emotional sentencing hearing, Sydney's mother, Emma Cooley, confronted her son-in-law, revealing that the first thing he asked her for after her daughter's death was his PlayStation. She also condemned him for remarrying in the same house where he had killed Sydney. Despite his claims of self-defense and that he wasn't a threat to society, the judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed under the plea deal.
