On a Sunday morning in August, the life of 29-year-old Jonah Oswald, a male Fairway Police Officer, was irrevocably altered. The day began with Lenexa police responding to a report of a stolen vehicle. When officers located the car, the driver, later identified as 40-year-old Shannon Wayne Marshall of Ashland City, Tennessee, struck a patrol car and fled.
A chase ensued along Interstate 35, with officers from multiple agencies joining the pursuit.
The chase came to an end in Mission, Kansas, when Marshall crashed the vehicle near a QuikTrip convenience store. He and a female passenger, 32-year-old Andrea Rene Cothran of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, then ran into the store. Officer Oswald, a four-year veteran of the Fairway Police Department and a U.S. Army Reserve veteran, was among the officers who converged on the scene to apprehend the two suspects. As law enforcement entered the QuikTrip, an exchange of gunfire erupted.
During the shootout, Officer Oswald was critically wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day, on August 7, 2023. The male suspect, Shannon Wayne Marshall, was shot and killed at the scene. His accomplice, Andrea Rene Cothran, was taken into custody.
Following the incident, Cothran was charged with multiple felonies, including aggravated battery, fleeing law enforcement, and felony theft. A murder charge was later added in connection with Officer Oswald's death. The Johnson County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team launched an investigation into the shooting. Officer Oswald, who was remembered as a warm-hearted and dedicated officer, left behind a wife and two young children.
