In a tragic turn of events on May 7, 2024, La-Toya Seamster-Lawagbon, a 42-year-old Black / African American female, was found deceased in her Kansas City, Kansas, residence. The discovery of her body in the 1900 block of North Hallock Street came after a bizarre incident at the University of Kansas Hospital. A man, later identified as 33-year-old Jessie Wayne Buchanan, had entered the hospital's emergency room, confessed to killing someone, and then discharged a firearm into the ceiling of the
security entrance.
Hospital security and local police quickly apprehended Buchanan at the scene. Following his confession, officers were dispatched to Seamster-Lawagbon's home, where they found her with fatal gunshot wounds. The scene was further marked by violence, as a dog was also found killed, and the windows of a Buick Century at the residence were shattered. This tragic event marked the tenth homicide in Kansas City, Kansas, for the year.
Jessie Wayne Buchanan was subsequently charged with a litany of crimes, including second-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, animal cruelty, and two counts of criminal damage to property. He is being held in the Wyandotte County Jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond. La-Toya Seamster-Lawagbon was a mother of two sons and is remembered by her family as an amazing woman, sister, and daughter. Her untimely and violent death has left a profound impact on her family and the Kansas City community.
