On May 24, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Topeka police responded to reports of an individual suffering from gunshot wounds in the 100 block of NW US 24 Highway. Upon arrival, officers discovered 61-year-old Charles Balocca, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel. This incident marked the city's sixth homicide investigation of the year.
