In the summer of 2022, the life of Kirk Mychale Sexton, a 34-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. On the evening of Saturday, July 16th, police were called to the 900 block of SW 8th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sexton suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Kirk, born on June 26, 1988, was known for his cheerful disposition and welcoming
smile. A graduate of Highland Park High School, he was a talented athlete who excelled in football, earning a scholarship to Fort Scott Community College. He was described as a loving son and a devoted older brother who brought joy to his family and friends.
In the days following the fatal shooting, the Topeka Police Department announced they were seeking to speak with Emmanuel Rashad Walker, a 35-year-old from Topeka, in connection with the homicide investigation. Authorities identified Walker as a person of interest and asked for the public's assistance in locating him. Walker has a criminal history, with previous convictions for aggravated assault, obstruction, and drug possession.
The investigation into Kirk Sexton's death continues as authorities seek to bring closure to his family and the community shaken by this act of violence.
