In Monroe, Louisiana, on the afternoon of Sunday, February 5, 2023, the life of 45-year-old Derrick Deon Moore was tragically cut short in a shooting that unfolded in the 1600 block of State Street. A male, Moore was a beloved father to seven children, three daughters and four sons, and a cherished grandfather. Known affectionately as 'D Moe,' he was remembered by his family as a fun and outgoing person who was always ready to lend a helping hand.
His passion for well-kept lawns had blossomed into a career in landscaping, and in his leisure time, he was a skilled domino player, earning the nickname 'The Dominologist' among his friends and family.
The investigation into his death quickly led Monroe Police to an 18-year-old woman from Ruston named Nakeya Baker. According to police reports, the events leading to the fatal shooting began with a call to Baker's girlfriend from her mother, who claimed she had been assaulted. In response, Baker drove her girlfriend and an unidentified man from Ruston to Monroe. Security footage from a local convenience store captured Baker's arrival in a white four-door vehicle with the male passenger. This man is alleged to have then approached Derrick Moore, knocked him to the ground, and fatally shot him.
Following the incident, Nakeya Baker was arrested and booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on a charge of criminal conspiracy related to the homicide. However, law enforcement officials did not immediately release the name of the male suspect who is believed to have fired the shots that killed Derrick Moore. The Monroe Police Department did release images of a person of interest in the case, but his identity, subsequent arrest, and any charges he may face in connection with Derrick Deon Moore's murder remain publicly undisclosed. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for the untimely death of a man remembered for his generosity and love for his family.
