Derrick James Thornton, a 43-year-old male, was a man of many talents and passions, known throughout his Lake Charles, Louisiana community as a creative force and a dedicated activist. An accomplished author, poet, and artist, he was also an entrepreneur and a student of Black history. His commitment to his community was evident in projects like the 'Gulf Coast Mural Project,' for which he was honored by the Mayor of Lake Charles.
He used his artistic talents to advocate for social justice and bring people together, leaving a lasting legacy of love and creativity.
The vibrant life of this community activist was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of February 18, 2023. Thornton was found deceased in the 1500 block of O’Brien Street in Lake Charles. It was determined that he had been killed by gun violence, a loss that sent ripples of shock and sadness through the city that he had worked so hard to improve. His death was immediately investigated by the Lake Charles Police Department as a homicide, beginning a search for those responsible for ending the life of a man who had given so much to others.
The investigation into his murder led to a breakthrough within a couple of weeks. On March 1, 2023, authorities took a 16-year-old into custody in the 500 block of South Goos Street. This first suspect was charged with first-degree murder and held at a juvenile detention center. The case continued to develop as detectives identified additional suspects. Shortly thereafter, four more juveniles were arrested in connection with the slaying. These additional suspects included three 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old. All four were also charged with one count of first-degree murder, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to five. The investigation remains ongoing as the community continues to mourn the loss of a beloved local artist and advocate.
