In the early evening hours of a Tuesday in Alexandria, Louisiana, the life of Dietrich Deshawn Gaines, a 20-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On March 7, 2023, at approximately 6:37 PM, officers from the Alexandria Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1400 block of Ashley Avenue following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Gaines inside the home, lying on the floor and suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and he was quickly transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Dietrich Deshawn Gaines succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The Alexandria Police Department's Detective Division immediately launched an investigation into the shooting, which was classified as the city's fourth homicide of the year. Their inquiries led to the swift arrest of a 17-year-old female, also from Alexandria. She was taken into custody and subsequently charged with one count of second-degree murder in connection with Gaines's death. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
