In the early evening of April 8, 2023, the life of 20-year-old Devyn Keon Thomas was tragically cut short in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A Black male, Thomas was discovered unresponsive inside a white Honda Accord in the 4200 block of 5th Avenue. Emergency responders from Acadian Ambulance arrived at the scene, but it was too late; Thomas was pronounced deceased.
The initial discovery of an unresponsive man quickly turned into a homicide investigation as the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office determined that Thomas had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Detectives with the Lake Charles Police Department delved into the case, utilizing video surveillance and other evidence to piece together the events that led to the young man's death. Their investigation revealed that what began as a drug transaction had escalated into a violent encounter that ended in gunfire. Through their diligent work, authorities were able to identify two individuals believed to be responsible for Thomas's death.
The investigation led to the arrests of 18-year-old Caleb Ahmir McFann and a 16-year-old female. On a Thursday following the incident, an arrest warrant was issued for McFann, charging him with one count of first-degree murder as a principal. The following day, the Lake Charles Police Department's SWAT team executed the warrant at an apartment complex on 5th Avenue, taking McFann into custody without incident. A judge set his bond at $750,000. That same Friday, the 16-year-old female was also arrested and faced a charge of first-degree murder as a principal. She was booked on a juvenile custodial affidavit and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation into the death of Devyn Keon Thomas remains ongoing, as authorities continue to seek any additional information related to the case.
