On April 13, 2023, 31-year-old Brittany Yvonne Guillory Fontenot, a female resident of Chataignier, Louisiana, died from multiple gunshot wounds. Her husband, Ray Charles Fontenot Jr., initially reported her death as a suicide, claiming she had shot herself three times in the head. This account was met with immediate skepticism by Brittany's family, who found the notion of suicide by three gunshots, involving two different firearms, to be unbelievable.
The family, particularly her mother, Yvonne Malveaux, publicly questioned the initial findings and tirelessly advocated for a more thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Brittany's death.
The family's persistence and the suspicious nature of the wounds prompted a deeper look into the case. The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, continued to investigate the inconsistencies in Ray Fontenot Jr.'s story. He claimed to have heard a 'popping noise' while getting ready for work and discovered his wife with a gunshot wound. According to his statement to deputies, a struggle ensued, during which Brittany allegedly shot herself two more times. The couple had reportedly been fighting and were in the process of separating at the time of the incident. The investigation also noted that Ray Fontenot Jr. and the couple's children were present in the home when the death occurred.
After a lengthy investigation, the case took a significant turn. In March 2025, investigators announced they had gathered sufficient evidence to formally charge Ray Charles Fontenot Jr. with one count of second-degree murder in connection with his wife's death. He was arrested by Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies and transported to Evangeline Parish, where he was booked into jail with a bond set at $2 million. Later that same month, a grand jury indicted the 33-year-old on the second-degree murder charge. His arraignment was scheduled for May of that year.
