In the summer of 2023, the life of a young Lafayette man was cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon. Kvon O’Neil, a 20-year-old male, was found with multiple gunshot wounds on July 5th in the 500 block of W. Gilman Street. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 1:35 p.m., where they administered life-saving measures before transporting him to a local hospital.
Despite their efforts, O’Neil succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a juvenile suspect who was subsequently taken into custody. Due to the suspect's age, their identity has not been publicly released. The charges brought against the juvenile were extensive, including eight counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. This series of charges stemmed not only from the incident that resulted in O'Neil's death but also from a preceding shooting on the same day.
Earlier, at Big Boys Tobacco Plus on N. University Avenue, another individual was shot and injured. This victim was also taken to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Investigators have been working to piece together the events of that day to understand the full scope of the violence and the connection between the two shootings.
Kvon O'Neil, born on October 11, 2002, was a graduate of Carencro High School where he achieved honors. He had also joined the Army National Guard, demonstrating a commitment to service. His family and friends remember him for the joy he found in simple pleasures like laughing, playing basketball, and enjoying seafood. His death has left a void in the community, a somber reminder of a young life ended too soon.
