On July 8, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Hammond, Louisiana, resulting in the death of 13-year-old Dereon Reed. The Hammond Police Department responded to a shooting at a residence in the 1200 block of Willow Street, where they found Dereon Reed had been fatally shot.

The investigation revealed that the shooting was accidental, caused by a 14-year-old boy who was handling a weapon that went off unexpectedly. Dereon Reed succumbed to her injuries from the gunshot.
