In the quiet community of Hammond, Louisiana, the summer of 2016 was shattered by a brutal act of violence that claimed the lives of a beloved aunt and her nephew. Beverly Cherokee Thompson, a 65-year-old woman, was found shot to death outside her home in the 1400 block of Hoover Street in the early morning hours of July 11, 2016. Inside the residence, her 39-year-old nephew, Toreo Thompson, was also discovered deceased, having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds.
The discovery of their
bodies sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, leaving friends and family grappling with the sudden and violent loss. Beverly, affectionately known as 'Cherokee,' was remembered by neighbors as a great lady, and her violent end was a stark contrast to the life she lived. The double homicide marked a grim turn for the city of Hammond, which had been unaccustomed to such violence in the preceding years.
The Hammond Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the killings. Their efforts led them to an armed robbery that had occurred just hours before the murders. Though not directly connected, information gleaned from the robbery victim provided a crucial lead. This information pointed detectives toward 20-year-old Elijah Walker of Hammond. Upon being taken into custody, Walker provided information that implicated two other men: 26-year-old Raheem Doby and 23-year-old Jerald Fontenberry, both of New Orleans.
Subsequently, all three men—Walker, Doby, and Fontenberry—were arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Beverly and Toreo Thompson. They were also each charged with one count of armed robbery. The apprehension of the suspects brought a small measure of solace to a community in mourning, as they awaited the progression of the legal process to bring justice for Beverly and her nephew.
