She was seated in the passenger side of a car parked at a gas pump when another vehicle, a white 2008 Honda Civic, pulled up alongside. Two masked individuals emerged from the Civic, armed with what police described as AR-style pistols, and unleashed between 70 and 80 rounds into the car where Shepard sat, killing her at the scene.
The subsequent investigation by the Hammond Police Department revealed that the shooters had been stalking their intended target, who had been in the same vehicle as Shepard earlier that evening. However, the target had exited the car before it arrived at the gas station. The assailants, apparently unaware of this, proceeded with their attack, mistakenly taking the life of an innocent woman.
