In the late summer of 2023, the life of 19-month-old Kaci Giselle Cyprian, a young female, was tragically cut short in Lafayette, Louisiana. On August 5th, what began as a response to a domestic disturbance at a residence on South General Marshall Street escalated into a chaotic and fatal shootout. Lafayette police officers were at the scene when gunfire erupted, and in the ensuing crossfire, the young child was struck and killed.
The incident resulted in multiple injuries beyond the
loss of the toddler. Kaci's four-year-old brother was wounded in the arm, and her great-aunt was also injured. Additionally, two Lafayette police officers sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange. The chaos of the event left a family and a community reeling from the violent and sudden loss of a child.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities identified the suspect as John Nicholas, the uncle of Kaci Cyprian. He was taken into custody and subsequently faced a litany of serious charges. These included one count of second-degree murder for the death of his niece, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, domestic abuse battery, child endangerment, and false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon.
The case has since moved into the legal system, with the trial for John Nicholas experiencing delays. After being rescheduled, the trial is now expected to take place in 2026. In a parallel legal action, the parents of Kaci Cyprian have filed lawsuits against both the Lafayette Police Department and the City of Lafayette. Their lawsuit alleges that the actions of the officers at the scene were negligent and constituted excessive force, directly leading to their daughter's wrongful death. The family has been vocal in their pursuit of transparency, calling for the release of body camera footage from the incident. Despite the charges against her brother, Kaci's mother has publicly stated her belief in his innocence.
