In the midst of a November afternoon, the sound of gunfire echoed through the Himbola Manor Apartments in Lafayette, Louisiana, forever altering the lives of a local family. On November 10, 2025, 23-year-old Oveyanna Francis, a Black female, was caught in the crossfire of a shootout in the parking lot of the apartment complex. She was an innocent bystander, not the intended target of the violence that erupted.
First responders found her with multiple gunshot wounds and immediately began life-saving measures. She was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Her family remembered her as a vibrant and joyful person with a passion for dancing who brought warmth and laughter to every room.
The Lafayette Police Department launched a homicide investigation and quickly determined that Oveyanna was an unintended victim of the shooting. The incident was described as a senseless act of violence that cut short a promising young life. In the days following the shooting, the investigation led to the arrest of two 17-year-old suspects, Rahiem Fontenot and John Angelle, both from Carencro. They are facing charges of second-degree murder. Authorities stated that the two were involved in a shootout between two groups of people in the parking lot when Oveyanna was struck by the gunfire.
As the investigation continued, a third and final suspect was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. With the third arrest, the police announced that the case was closed. All three teenagers are facing second-degree murder charges for their alleged roles in the death of Oveyanna Francis. The tragic death of Oveyanna was the tenth murder in Lafayette that year and the third instance where an innocent bystander was killed in a crossfire situation, leaving the community to mourn the loss of another young life to senseless gun violence.
