In the warm evening of August 6, 2023, the life of 13-year-old Juelz Brock was tragically cut short on a street in New Orleans. A Black male, Juelz was a rising eighth-grader and a dedicated athlete, known for his love of football and basketball. He had just finished a fun outing, bowling with some of his closest friends, and was waiting for his mother to pick him up when the fatal incident occurred.
The moments leading up to his death are filled with conflicting accounts.
Some reports suggest a dispute over a basketball game may have escalated, while others indicate the possibility of him being an unintended victim in a drive-by shooting. Another version of the events points to a friend of a friend becoming upset and discharging a weapon. What is known is that Juelz was shot in the 7700 block of Shubert Street. His mother, having just spoken to him about his ride home, arrived at the scene to a heartbreaking sight before police had fully cordoned off the area.
In the days that followed the shooting, the community mourned the loss of a young life full of promise. City council members held a moment of silence in his honor, remembering him as a remarkable kid. Amid the grief, the investigation into his death moved forward. On August 8, a 14-year-old male suspect turned himself into the New Orleans Police Department. Due to his age, his name was not publicly released.
The teenage suspect was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center and booked on charges of negligent homicide, obstruction of justice, and illegal use of a weapon. The charge of negligent homicide suggests that law enforcement does not believe the shooting was intentional. This has been a point of contention for Juelz's family, who have expressed their belief that the charge is too lenient for the loss of their son's life.
