An afternoon at a Carencro, Louisiana park turned deadly on November 9, 2023, ending the life of 18-year-old Tyrell Earnest Harris. A recent graduate of Carencro High School, Harris was remembered for his caring heart and a smile that could illuminate any room he entered. He enjoyed playing basketball and spending time with his family and friends.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m. that Thursday, Carencro Police responded to reports of gunfire at Carencro Park. Upon arrival, they discovered Harris and another 18-year-old, Eric Nunnery, inside a vehicle, both having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene. Nunnery was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later, on November 11, 2023.
The investigation, aided by public cooperation and crime cameras, swiftly led to a suspect. Within 20 minutes of the shooting, authorities located and arrested 21-year-old Kamie Jacob LeBlanc in Lafayette. He was taken into custody without incident.
LeBlanc faced a series of serious charges, including one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Following an investigation, a Lafayette Parish grand jury indicted LeBlanc on February 22, 2024, on two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Harris and Nunnery. At the time of his initial arrest, LeBlanc also faced charges of distribution or possession with intent to distribute Schedule 1 narcotics, illegal carrying of a weapon, and illegal use of a dangerous weapon. He is currently being held at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center without bond while awaiting further legal proceedings.
