In the spring of 2019, a gathering of friends at the French Colony Apartment complex in Carencro, Louisiana, turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy. On the evening of March 30th, 20-year-old Dustin A. Wiltz, a male resident of Carencro, was present at the apartment with his friend, Adam R. Williamson, who was also 20. The social event took a dark and unforeseen turn when another visitor, 20-year-old Jeremy Edwards, entered the apartment and, for reasons that remain unknown, opened fire on
the occupants.
The sudden eruption of violence left both Dustin Wiltz and Adam Williamson fatally wounded. In the chaotic aftermath, Edwards did not flee immediately. Instead, he robbed another individual at the complex before stealing a vehicle to make his escape. His freedom was short-lived, however, as Carencro Police quickly located and pursued the stolen vehicle. The chase came to an abrupt end when Edwards crashed the car into a tree, leading to his swift apprehension by the authorities. The community was left in shock and mourning, grappling with the senseless loss of two young lives.
An investigation into Jeremy Edwards's background revealed a history of criminal activity. At the time of the shooting, he was already a convicted felon, which made his possession of a firearm illegal. The charges against him quickly mounted, reflecting the gravity of his actions on that fatal night. He faced two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Dustin Wiltz and Adam Williamson, in addition to charges of armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and aggravated flight from an officer. The legal process moved forward, carrying the weight of the immense grief felt by the victims' families.
In March 2023, nearly four years after the tragic event, Jeremy Edwards appeared in a courtroom filled with the families of the two young men he had killed. He pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. This plea was part of an agreement with the 15th Judicial District Attorney's Office, which was consented to by the victims' families. In exchange for his guilty plea, Edwards was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation, ensuring he would never again pose a threat to the community. The legal conclusion brought a measure of closure to a case that had deeply scarred the Carencro community.
