On the evening of March 30, 2019, a burst of violence at the French Colony Apartment complex in Carencro, Louisiana, tragically ended the life of 20-year-old Adam R. Williamson. A male native of Krotz Springs and resident of Opelousas, Williamson was at a social gathering inside one of the apartments when another young man entered and opened fire. Both Williamson and his friend, Dustin A. Wiltz, were fatally wounded in the attack and died at the scene.
The suddenness of the event left a community in shock and two families devastated by the loss of their loved ones.
The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Jeremy Edwards, did not remain at large for long. After the killings, he robbed another individual at the apartment complex and fled in a stolen vehicle. His escape was short-lived, however, as Carencro Police quickly located the stolen car and initiated a pursuit. The chase came to an end when Edwards lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. He was taken into custody by the authorities at the crash site, bringing a swift, albeit grim, end to the manhunt.
In the aftermath, the investigation into the double homicide revealed a history of criminal activity for Jeremy Edwards. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, in addition to armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and aggravated flight from an officer. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, leaving friends and family to grapple with the senseless nature of the crime.
The legal process concluded in March 2023 when Jeremy Edwards appeared in a courtroom filled with the families of his victims. He pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. As part of a plea agreement with the 15th Judicial District Attorney's Office, which the victims' families consented to, Edwards was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation. This plea deal spared him from facing the death penalty, but ensured he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the fatal shootings of Adam Williamson and Dustin Wiltz.
