Troydell Javon Simmons, 34, a Black man, was killed on the night of May 30, 2024, outside Carencro, Louisiana, in a stretch of roadway where the quiet can turn sudden and unforgiving. Deputies with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office were called to the 400 block of Louveteau Road at about 10:15 p.m., and there they found him lying in the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound. Not long after, authorities said he died from those injuries.
As detectives worked backward from the scene, they concluded the violence began as a physical fight between Simmons and another man, and that the struggle escalated with weapons in play. Investigators said both a knife and a gun were involved in the confrontation, turning what may have started as a one-on-one altercation into a deadly exchange.
The investigation led to the arrest of Thaddius Livings, who was taken into custody and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a manslaughter charge. A booking record for Livings lists a booking date of May 31, 2024, reflecting that the arrest followed quickly on the heels of the shooting, while authorities continued treating the case as an active investigation and released no further narrative about what sparked the fight or what moments, precisely, caused it to turn fatal.
In the days that followed, Simmons’ death shifted from a crime scene to a grieving community preparing to say goodbye. Funeral home information published afterward identified him by name and noted services planned in Lafayette, marking the passage from the night on Louveteau Road to the rituals of mourning that come after sudden loss.
