In the late hours of a Saturday night in Lafayette, Louisiana, a devastating act of violence cut short the life of 37-year-old Michelle Touchet. On December 9, 2023, while walking home from a neighbor's house in the 300 block of Sampson Avenue, Touchet was gunned down, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. She tragically died at the scene, her sudden death marking the 26th homicide in Lafayette for the year.
The incident left the community in shock and searching for answers.
The Lafayette Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the senseless killing. Their efforts quickly led to a breakthrough in the case. A few days later, authorities announced the arrest of a suspect. Deaontrae Sampson, 29, of Lafayette, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. The investigation was still ongoing, and police urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
Sampson was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail on a charge of second-degree murder, as well as charges for illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and illegal discharge of a firearm. A judge set his bond at $500,000. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the fatal shooting has not been publicly released by investigators. The case against Deaontrae Sampson is expected to proceed through the legal system.
