In the late afternoon of February 8, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Baton Rouge neighborhood. When the violence subsided, 23-year-old Tedrick Owens, a male, lay dead from gunshot wounds in the 1700 block of 75th Street. The shooting, which occurred at approximately 3:26 p.m., also left another man wounded and in critical condition.
Owens was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving investigators with the immediate task of determining a motive and identifying who was responsible for the deadly attack.
For months, the case progressed without a named suspect. Then, on August 20, 2024, homicide detectives with the Baton Rouge Police Department announced a significant development. They had arrested 23-year-old Tremayne 'Meezy' Lindsey, identifying him as the person responsible for the fatal shooting of Owens and the wounding of the second individual. Lindsey was taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Further investigation revealed a troubling history for the accused. At the time of Owens' death, Lindsey was reportedly under house arrest and was required to wear a GPS ankle monitor as a condition of his bond in a separate, earlier shooting case. In the months following the February shooting, Lindsey was arrested again in connection with an armed robbery case involving gang members before he was ultimately charged with the murder of Tedrick Owens. In December 2024, a grand jury formally indicted Lindsey, changing the charges to second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder in connection with the incident that claimed Owens' life.
