In the early morning hours of Friday, June 7, 2024, the life of 43-year-old Bazile Mitchell Jr., a male resident of Plaquemine, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. Neighbors reported hearing a loud argument escalating from a home on North Nadler Street, culminating in the distinct sound of a gunshot around 6:30 a.m.. The Plaquemine Police Department was summoned to the scene shortly after, where they discovered Mitchell's body inside the residence, bearing fatal bullet wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide quickly focused on members of Mitchell's own family. The argument that preceded the shooting was reportedly between Mitchell, his sister Sammie Dorsey, and her 19-year-old son, Deandre Devon Dorsey. Following the discovery of the body, authorities began searching for the mother and son duo in connection with the killing. Sammie Dorsey, who was 50 years old at the time, was located and arrested at the scene on Friday. She was subsequently charged with obstruction of justice and failure to report certain felonies.
The search for the primary suspect, Deandre Devon Dorsey, continued into the next day. On Saturday morning, the teenage nephew of the victim surrendered to the Plaquemine Police Department. Initially, authorities had considered charging him with accusations similar to his mother's, but upon his arrest, he was charged with the more severe crime of second-degree murder, in addition to obstruction of justice. In the aftermath of the tragic event, police boarded up Mitchell's home and began a search of a nearby wooded area for the weapon used in the homicide.
