In the quiet town of Plaquemine, Louisiana, the life of Jahiem Amaru Gailes, a 22-year-old male, was abruptly cut short on the evening of Tuesday, June 4, 2024. A graduate of Plaquemine High School, Gailes was a private first class in the Louisiana National Guard with over five years of service. He had also attended Southern University and had plans to return to college to complete his degree.
Described by his mother as a kind-hearted individual who was always willing to help others, Gailes's sudden death sent shockwaves through his community.
On that fateful evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Gailes was at his home on Bourgoyne Street when the tranquility was shattered by the sound of gunfire. According to the Plaquemine Police Department, a man approached Gailes's residence and began shooting. Gailes, who was outside at the time, was struck by a bullet. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect: Rashad Seals. The Plaquemine police chief stated that their initial investigation indicated Seals was the individual who walked up to Gailes's home and opened fire. Gailes's mother revealed that her son and Seals had grown up together, referring to each other as 'cousins,' but had drifted apart as they got older due to taking different paths in life. She attributed the motive for the shooting to jealousy, stating her belief that Seals was struggling with personal demons.
A warrant for Seals's arrest on a charge of second-degree murder was issued. At the time of the shooting, Seals was reportedly on parole until 2030 for a prior heroin possession conviction and had a history of arrests for drug and gun offenses. He was also wanted in connection with a recent burglary in Baton Rouge. The manhunt for Seals concluded on June 6, 2024, when he was apprehended in Baytown, Texas. He was awaiting extradition back to Plaquemine to face the murder charge.
