On a night that should have been filled with joyful anticipation, 11-year-old SaMiya McClain was helping her family prepare for a toddler's birthday party. It was Friday, October 4, 2024, in LaPlace, Louisiana, and inside her uncle's home, balloons were being inflated for a three-year-old's celebration. Tragically, this scene of innocent festivity was shattered by gunfire just before midnight, ending the lives of young SaMiya, a female, and her 50-year-old uncle, Ron Tate.
The hail of bullets that pierced the home on North Sugar Ridge Drive was not meant for them. Law enforcement officials believe the shooting was a targeted act of revenge that missed its intended mark. Surveillance footage from the neighborhood revealed two gunmen hiding behind bushes and a parked car before opening fire on an individual who appeared in front of Tate's residence. That person escaped unharmed, but SaMiya and her uncle were fatally wounded. A third woman inside the house was also struck by a bullet, sustaining a non-life-threatening injury.
The events leading to the tragic shooting reportedly began with an altercation at a high school football game earlier that evening. It is believed that two men, later identified as 23-year-old Cartez Foster of LaPlace and 26-year-old Patrick Maxon of Norco, were involved in an incident where they allegedly pistol-whipped a woman. This led to a retaliatory assault on Foster and Maxon by friends of the woman. The subsequent shooting at the Tate residence is thought to have been the suspects' violent response to the earlier conflict.
Thanks to the aid of a network of crime cameras, investigators were able to track the suspects' movements. Cartez Foster and Patrick Maxon were swiftly apprehended by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office the following morning. They were both charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. The local sheriff has indicated that he believes there is sufficient evidence to pursue the death penalty for this senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of two innocent bystanders.
