In the late summer of 1992, a sense of unease settled over the small city of Zachary, Louisiana, following the disappearance of 41-year-old Connie Warner. A mother and an accountant, Warner was a familiar face in the community. On August 24, 1992, concern mounted when she could not be reached. Her daughter, Tracy, went to her home to investigate and was met with a disturbing scene that suggested a violent struggle had taken place.
Bloodstains were found in several rooms, and it appeared as though furniture had been moved, indicating a desperate fight for survival. Warner's car was still at the residence, adding to the mystery of her whereabouts.
For weeks, the community held its breath, hoping for Warner's safe return. However, their hopes were tragically dashed when, in September, her badly decomposed body was discovered in a drainage ditch. The condition of her remains made it evident that she had been the victim of a brutal homicide; the cause of death was later determined to be a skull fracture. The investigation into her murder was immediately hampered by a significant natural event. Hurricane Andrew had swept through the area shortly after her disappearance, washing away crucial forensic evidence that could have led to her killer.
Despite the challenges, investigators began to focus on a potential suspect, a man named Derrick Todd Lee. Over time, Lee would become known as the 'Baton Rouge Serial Killer,' linked to the murders of at least seven women in the area. Law enforcement had reason to believe Warner was one of his early victims. Another woman, Randi Mebruer, disappeared from the same subdivision in Zachary six years later, and the similarities between the two cases were striking to investigators. Furthermore, the former boyfriend of Warner's teenage daughter reported seeing a man who resembled Lee lurking near the Warner home before her disappearance.
Although investigators strongly suspected Derrick Todd Lee in Connie Warner's murder and obtained a DNA sample from him in connection with her case and the disappearance of Randi Mebruer, he was never formally charged with her death. While his DNA did link him to several other homicides, for which he was eventually convicted and sentenced to death, there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him for Warner's murder. The evidence that might have definitively tied him to the crime was believed to have been lost to the floodwaters of Hurricane Andrew. Derrick Todd Lee died in prison in 2016 from natural causes, taking any certainty about his involvement in Connie Warner's death with him. To this day, her murder remains officially unsolved, a cold case that continues to haunt the community of Zachary.
