In the early hours of January 2, 2023, tragedy struck in the Tyler Park neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, claiming the life of 36-year-old Diunta Eugene Cross. A male, Cross was discovered with a gunshot wound around 1:30 a.m. at an apartment complex located in the 1600 block of Beechwood Avenue, near Baxter Avenue. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Originally from Chicago Heights, Illinois, Cross had relocated to Louisville
to build a better life for himself and his family. Known as a friendly and kind-hearted individual, he was a devoted father to his five children. He was often seen teaching them practical life skills, demonstrating his commitment to their upbringing and well-being. His death left a profound void in the lives of his loved ones, who remembered him as a hardworking man dedicated to supporting his family.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to a significant development approximately two weeks later. On January 16, 2023, authorities arrested 35-year-old Naji Lee Hughes and charged him with murder in connection with Cross's death.
During a subsequent probable cause hearing, details of the investigation began to emerge. Prosecutors presented evidence, including cell phone records and witness statements, that placed Hughes at the scene of the crime at the time of the shooting. One witness, who claimed to know Hughes well, directly contradicted his initial alibi that he was at home with his mother. The defense attorney for Hughes argued that the situation was not as clear-cut as presented, suggesting that his client was acting to protect the witness from Cross and that it was unclear who had fired the first shot. Despite these arguments, the judge found probable cause for the murder charge to proceed, and the case was scheduled to be presented to a grand jury.
