In the evening chill of January 6, 2023, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the sounds of gunfire shattered the night at the intersection of East 20th and Greenup streets in Covington, Kentucky. When police arrived at the scene of the reported double shooting, they discovered two men who had been shot. One of the victims was 23-year-old Selvin Orlando Alvarado, a Hispanic male.
He was found with critical injuries and was immediately rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for emergency treatment. The second victim, Hector Manuel Saur, also 23, had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was reported to be in stable condition.
Despite the urgent efforts of medical personnel, Selvin Orlando Alvarado’s injuries proved to be too severe. After fighting for his life for three days, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. on January 9, 2023. The Covington Police Department expressed their condolences to Alvarado's grieving family as they continued their investigation into the tragic shooting.
The investigation into the double shooting and subsequent homicide moved quickly. Detectives were able to identify and apprehend two suspects in connection with the incident. Due to their status as juveniles, their identities have not been publicly released. The two were initially charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree assault. However, following Alvarado's death, these charges were upgraded to murder. The case highlights the devastating impact of gun violence on the community and the swift actions of law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
