In the Russell neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, on the evening of July 17, 2023, the life of 24-year-old Benard Edward Cochrum, a Black male, was tragically cut short. Around 8:50 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of 26th and Madison Streets. Upon their arrival, they found Cochrum suffering from a gunshot wound.
Officers at the scene administered first aid until emergency medical services could take over.
Cochrum was then transported to UofL Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that a gunshot wound was the cause of his death.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit is handling the ongoing investigation into Cochrum's death. Investigators canvassed the area where the shooting occurred in an attempt to locate witnesses and gather any information that might lead to the person or persons responsible. As of the latest available reports, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities have asked that anyone with information regarding the incident contact the LMPD's anonymous tip line. Memorial services for Benard Cochrum were held on August 6, 2023, as his family and friends gathered to mourn their loss.
