In the warm evening of July 15, 2025, the life of 17-year-old Dunia Tuhenya was tragically cut short in the Newburg neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. A promising young man, known to his friends as Duni, he was found in the 300 block of Poplar Level Court around 5:40 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency services rushed him to UofL Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity.
The shooting occurred at the Chateau Village Apartments, just a building away from where he lived with his family, who had immigrated from Tanzania in 2017.
Dunia was a beloved and active member of his community. He was preparing to enter his senior year at Moore High School, where he was the captain of the soccer team. On the morning of his death, he was at soccer practice, a testament to his dedication to the sport he loved. Beyond athletics, he was known for his eagerness to participate, volunteer, and take on responsibilities. He was actively involved with See Forward Ministries, an organization that mentors refugee families, and was even learning to drive in the ministry's parking lot. Ten days after the fatal shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Dunia Tuhenya's death. The Louisville Metro Police Department charged a 15-year-old male with murder, possession of a handgun by a minor, tampering with physical evidence, and resisting arrest. The name of the suspect has not been publicly released due to his age. The circumstances that led to the shooting have not been detailed by the authorities.
