In the spring of 2024, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded inside a Louisville, Kentucky business. Dion R. Smith, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded on the evening of May 18th in a shooting that also left another man injured. The incident occurred in the 4400 block of Taylor Boulevard, prompting a response from the Louisville Metro Police Department's Fourth Division.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered two men inside the
establishment suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were dispatched, and both victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Dion R. Smith succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival and was pronounced deceased. The second victim's injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
The investigation into the shooting was quickly taken over by the LMPD's Homicide Unit. In a swift turn of events, a suspect was detained at the scene of the crime. The individual was later identified as Gage L. Lewis, an 18-year-old resident of Louisville. Following his detainment, Lewis was arrested and formally charged with murder in connection with the death of Dion R. Smith. He was subsequently lodged in the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
The loss of Dion R. Smith was deeply felt by his family and friends. He was a father to two young sons, Damoni and Darien Smith. His passing left a void in the lives of his parents, Michelle Eddie and Dejabbar Shabazz, his brother, Mion Smith Sr., and the mother of his children, Ramoni Collins, along with a wider circle of family and close friends who mourned his untimely death.
