In the quiet community of Monticello, Kentucky, a dispute at a logging yard on a Tuesday morning shattered the peace and ended the life of a local man. On September 10, 2024, 75-year-old Samuel R. White, a White/Caucasian male, was involved in a verbal altercation that quickly escalated to fatal violence. The argument took place on R Barnett Road, where words turned deadly.
The disagreement was with another Monticello resident, 66-year-old Willard Ray Upchurch.
During the heated exchange, Upchurch allegedly brandished a firearm and shot White. Emergency services were called to the scene around 11:30 a.m., but upon arrival, they found Samuel R. White in the roadway with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased by the Wayne County Coroner.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched by the Kentucky State Police. Their efforts led them to locate Willard Ray Upchurch a short time after the incident. Upchurch was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. He was then lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center. The firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was also recovered by law enforcement nearby. While no official motive has been released, unconfirmed reports suggest the deadly altercation may have stemmed from a possible land dispute. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at the State Medical Office in Frankfort.
