On September 19, 2024, District Judge Kevin R. Mullins of Letcher County, Kentucky, was shot and killed in his chambers at the courthouse in Whitesburg, Kentucky. The incident occurred around 3:00 P.M. EDT. Mullins, who was 54 years old at the time of his death, had served as a district judge for the 47th Judicial District since his appointment by former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear in 2009.
