In a tragic turn of events on Saturday, May 6, 2023, 18-year-old Nolan Ray Naegele, a White male from Hazard, Kentucky, was fatally shot in Whitesburg, Kentucky. The incident occurred in a vehicle on KY 15 Business, while Naegele was driving and being pursued by police. He was transported to the Whitesburg ARH Hospital where he was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to his right shoulder that entered his chest.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting allegedly began as a three-day period of marijuana and methamphetamine use involving Naegele, his girlfriend, and 19-year-old Ethan S. Brown. According to police, this situation escalated into a possible hostage scenario. Brown reportedly contacted his mother, claiming he was being held captive by Naegele and needed $2,500 for his release. After his mother contacted the police, an officer spotted the vehicle Naegele was driving and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
During the ensuing police pursuit, Naegele's vehicle swerved, hit a ditch, and then struck a guardrail. It was during this chase that Brown allegedly shot Naegele. Following the crash, Brown surrendered to the police. He claimed that Naegele had accused him of stealing $2,500, had shot at him multiple times, and pistol-whipped him while holding him hostage over the preceding three days. Brown alleged that when they saw the police, Naegele tossed him the gun and told him he would be blamed for everything.
Ethan S. Brown was immediately arrested and charged with murder. He was lodged in the Letcher County Jail without bond. Although a grand jury initially declined to indict Brown in 2023, the case was later reviewed by the current Commonwealth's Attorney. In October 2025, a grand jury indicted Ethan S.
