On Friday, March 31, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in the Lents neighborhood of Southeast Portland. At approximately 10:14 p.m., Portland Police Bureau officers responded to a 'Shots Fired' call at an apartment complex located in the 9100 block of Southeast Crystal Springs Boulevard, near Southeast 92nd Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found 48-year-old Connie Campagna-Martinez deceased at the scene.
The Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Campagna-Martinez died of homicide
by gunshot wounds. The investigation was handled by the PPB Homicide Unit, which included detectives gathering evidence from the apartment unit and its surroundings. At the time of the initial response, no immediate arrests were made, and the suspect or suspects had already left the scene.
On Saturday, April 8, 2023, PPB homicide detectives, assisted by the Klamath County Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshals Service, arrested a 17-year-old male suspect in Chiloquin, Oregon. The teenager was booked into the Klamath County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. He is scheduled to be transferred to Multnomah County at a later time.
Connie Campagna-Martinez's death marked the 19th homicide in Portland for the year 2023. Her family has been notified of her death and has requested privacy during this time.
The investigation and subsequent arrest were part of the ongoing efforts by the PPB to address the rising gun violence in the area, which has seen a significant increase since the elimination of the PPB Gun Violence Reduction Team.
