In the late hours of a Saturday in Portland, Oregon, the life of James Mack, a 50-year-old White male, was tragically cut short. On November 25, 2023, at approximately 10:14 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the Centennial neighborhood of Southeast Portland. Upon arrival at the home near Southeast 154th Avenue, officers discovered Mack deceased on the front porch.
The subsequent investigation by the medical examiner determined that James Mack had died
from a gunshot wound, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. Detectives from the Portland Police Homicide Unit immediately began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. The suspect or suspects had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, and no immediate arrests were made that night.
In the weeks that followed, investigators were able to identify a suspect in the killing. William M. Maingi, a 27-year-old from the nearby city of Gresham, was identified as the individual allegedly involved in Mack's death. On December 6, 2023, a Multnomah County Grand Jury handed down an indictment for Maingi for the murder of James Mack. With the assistance of the East Metro SWAT team, homicide detectives arrested Maingi on December 10, 2023. He was subsequently booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not publicly released details regarding a motive or what may have led to the shooting as the investigation remains ongoing.
