On the evening of June 4, 2024, Joshua Michael Kelvin, a 42-year-old Caucasian male from Aumsville, Oregon, was working as a rideshare driver in Portland. Just before midnight, in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, an unknown individual or individuals opened fire on his vehicle at the intersection of Southeast 130th Place and Southeast Ramona Street.
Kelvin was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene from a gunshot wound, his death later being ruled a homicide by the medical examiner.
Inside the car with Kelvin was a 17-year-old male passenger who was his fare for the evening. The teenager was also hit by the gunfire and sustained critical, life-threatening injuries. First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment. The passenger ultimately survived the attack. The suspect or suspects fled the scene before police arrived, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
The Portland Police Bureau is actively investigating the case and has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for Joshua Kelvin's death. Crime Stoppers of Oregon has offered a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest in this unsolved felony crime. Detectives are urging anyone with knowledge of the incident, who has not yet come forward, to contact them. As of now, the investigation remains ongoing, with no suspects publicly identified or taken into custody.
